Federal authorities arrested Abdulrahman Alfozan, a Saudi national employed by OpenAI, and charged him with planting a sophisticated recording device in an executive conference room at the company's San Francisco office. The Department of Justice announced the charges on Tuesday.
OpenAI discovered the device, concealed in a television, around September 30. The company determined it had been installed a few days prior. OpenAI utilized its internal AI models to analyze the device and identify Alfozan as the employee responsible for planting it. The device contained advanced encryption and data transfer mechanisms.
Prosecutors with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California charged Alfozan with using an electronic device to intercept oral communications without permission. According to prosecutors, Alfozan was apprehended behind the television where the device was placed, an area where OpenAI had installed a camera that allegedly captured him.
FBI Director Kash Patel stated that the scheme was intended to "capture sensitive communications about the company’s super intelligence technology." OpenAI confirmed the incident on X, stating that it was supporting the FBI's investigation and that there were no indications of Alfozan inappropriately accessing or exfiltrating model weights, source code, or customer data. Alfozan, who began working at OpenAI in July 2025 on the product team, faces up to five years in prison if convicted.
