Barack and Michelle Obama personally greeted the first 100 visitors to the center on Friday. They also participated in a reading of "Where the Wild Things Are" for 25 school children at the Chicago Public Library branch located within the center. During the reading, Michelle Obama interjected with a comment about kings, which was met with applause, and the Obamas posed for photos against a large painting inspired by Carl Sandburg's poem about Chicago.
The center's campus includes a museum dedicated to the nation's first Black president and first lady, alongside public spaces such as a library branch, playground, and athletic center. The museum's tower design symbolizes four hands coming together in solidarity, and a portion of Obama's 2015 speech commemorating the Selma-to-Montgomery march is inscribed on its exterior.
