New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill on Thursday called for Lieutenant Governor Dale Caldwell to resign by Friday, citing violations of the state's ethics and discrimination rules. A report published Wednesday by a law firm hired by the governor's office concluded that Caldwell had violated the state's policy prohibiting discrimination in the workplace. The report stated that Caldwell made an advance toward a staffer's friend and, upon being rebuffed, told the staffer, 'You young women are looking for young sperm.'
Governor Sherrill, a Democrat, said in a statement that the investigation found Caldwell engaged in 'serious, repeated violations of state policy and failed to uphold the responsibilities of his office.' The report also accused Caldwell of breaking ethics rules by attempting to secure a promotion for a state employee he was dating and by bringing personal guests to ticketed events without paying for them, which the report deemed an impermissible benefit.
