NATO Chief Rutte to Meet Trump at White House Amid Tensions

Rutte's visit, set for Wednesday, follows recent critical remarks from Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, who described NATO as a "paper tiger" and announced a six-month review of U.S. troop deployments in Europe. Hegseth stated the review aims to ensure the alliance "moves fast and irreversibly toward Europe leading," though he did not specify if it would result in a drawdown of U.S. forces.

The trip also comes after reports that the U.S. informed its European allies earlier this month of its intention to reduce the number of fighter jets and warships deployed for NATO's response in the early stages of a conflict. President Trump has previously expressed frustration with NATO allies, particularly regarding their support during the Iran war and their collective stance on the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump has consistently pushed NATO members to increase their defense spending, insisting they must accelerate efforts to meet the agreed-upon goal of investing 5 percent of their gross domestic product annually on defense.
