South Korean financial group Mirae Asset is planning to establish a significant digital asset business valued at approximately $109 billion (150 trillion won). This venture will be built around Digital X, the crypto exchange formerly known as Korbit, which Mirae Asset acquired a 97.15% stake in for 141.4 billion won in July.
The strategy for Digital X involves focusing on cryptocurrencies, stablecoins, and the tokenization of real-world assets, including physical commodities like gold, silver, and electricity, as well as security token offerings. This move marks the first instance of a South Korean financial group affiliate taking control of a domestic cryptocurrency exchange.
Despite being South Korea's first cryptocurrency exchange founded in 2013, Korbit held only a 0.5% market share in 2025. Mirae Asset founder and chairman Park Hyeon-joo announced these plans, aiming to make Digital X a core component of 'Mirae Asset 3.0.' In line with this expansion, Digital X has initiated a zero-fee trading policy for all won-denominated assets, which is set to continue through August 24, 2027.
