Mexico's state-run Federal Electricity Commission is poised to approve as many as 60 renewable energy projects, primarily solar, which could add 8.2 GW of new generation capacity and represent an investment of up to $12.5 billion. The approvals are part of President Claudia Sheinbaum's strategy to increase alternative energy sources in the country's power mix. Earlier this month, the energy ministry had identified 42 solar projects totaling 6.86 GW and 13 wind projects totaling over 4 GW in the development pipeline. Private companies have indicated readiness to invest $4.75 billion in 3.32 GW of alternative generation capacity. The government aims to significantly boost solar, geothermal, and wind capacity over the next four years as part of its energy transition goals.
