Japanese investment firm Metaplanet announced it acquired 2,823 Bitcoin in the second quarter for approximately $222 million, bringing its total holdings to 43,000 BTC. This purchase marks the company's smallest quarterly acquisition in a year, a significant decrease from the 17,473 BTC accumulated in the third quarter of 2025. Metaplanet funded the majority of its Q2 purchases through debt and revenue from its 'Bitcoin Income Generation' program, which sells options against its holdings, rather than issuing new shares. As of June 30, Metaplanet's 43,000 BTC were valued at $2.5 billion, a substantial unrealized loss compared to its acquisition cost of $4.07 billion, reflecting Bitcoin's more than 20% price drop during the quarter. The company maintains ambitious targets of holding 100,000 BTC by the end of 2026 and 210,000 BTC by the end of 2027.
