Emily Dalton Smith, a Meta executive tasked with leading product development for internal AI tooling as part of the company's AI restructuring, is leaving Meta. Smith had been with the company since 2015.
Her departure comes amid reports of significant internal unrest within Meta's Applied AI division. Meta's Chief Technology Officer, Andrew Bosworth, acknowledged that the company had an "atrocious" rollout of the new AI division and pledged to improve internal culture, communication, and career growth opportunities for employees. He cited employee feedback as a driver for these changes, admitting that the company had "undermined the trust" employees had in their contributions being valued and their careers advancing.
Bosworth also noted that management structures were shaken up during rapid strategy shifts, leaving teams in disarray. He suggested that while speed was necessary in forming the AI team, employees might need to work on less fulfilling projects temporarily. In a separate communication, Maher Saba, a vice president leading the Applied AI team, stated that employees who were reassigned to the division would now be allowed to apply for other roles within Meta if they secure them, signaling a return to more standard operational practices.
