Republican candidate for lieutenant governor in Massachusetts, Shawn Oliver, announced Sunday he was suspending his campaign hours after his arrest in a suspected drunk-driving crash. Oliver, a city councilor in New Bedford and a corrections officer, stated on X that the election was too important to be overshadowed by personal matters. His running mate, Republican gubernatorial candidate Mike Minogue, had asked Oliver to immediately suspend his campaign, expressing extreme disappointment and stating there was no excuse for driving under the influence. Police reported that Oliver, 42, was arrested after his vehicle struck multiple parked cars before overturning late Saturday. He was hospitalized for injuries and faces charges including operating under the influence of alcohol. New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell called the allegations deeply concerning. Minogue is running against incumbent Democratic Governor Maura Healey on November 3.
