Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, and his wife Priscilla Chan have purchased Strancally Castle and its surrounding 440-acre estate in County Waterford, Ireland. The gothic-style mansion, built in 1830, will serve as a base for the couple during their visits to Ireland, where Meta has established its international headquarters.
The off-market deal's price was not disclosed, but estimates from The Irish Times suggest a value between €20 million and €30 million. The previous owners, Michael Alen-Buckley and Giancarla Alen-Buckley, who had owned the estate for 25 years and restored it in the early 2000s, expressed their pleasure that the property would continue to be maintained and enhanced.
Strancally Castle was designed by architects James and George Richard Pain for John Keily. The estate's extensive grounds require a significant walk between the kitchen and dining room, a detail noted in historical accounts.
Zuckerberg's acquisition places him among a growing number of tech billionaires investing in large Irish country estates. Stripe co-founder John Collison purchased the Abbey Leix estate in County Laois in 2021, and James Dyson acquired Ballynatray House in 2024, both located in proximity to Strancally Castle.
