A 30-year-old man from Sudan has been charged with attempted murder following a knife attack in Belfast that left a victim seriously injured and triggered anti-immigrant violence. Hadi Alodid appeared via video link in Belfast Magistrates’ Court, where he was accused of blinding Stephen Ogilvie in his left eye during the stabbing. He also faces charges of threatening to kill a radiographer and possessing a knife.
Alodid refused legal representation and did not enter a plea. The court was told the victim sustained cuts to his face, lacerations to his back, and has lost his left eye. Judge Steven Keown refused bail and adjourned the case to July 8, condemning the violence and warning perpetrators of severe consequences.
The court appearance followed a night of disorder in which masked men set fire to several homes believed to house immigrants, burned trash bins, and torched a Belfast bus. Police were pelted with objects, and firefighters rescued several people from burning homes. A local resident described the night as horrific and expressed fear for his safety.
