Karnataka's Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has urged the Union Minister to expedite the approval process for mobility projects in Bengaluru, collectively valued at Rs 13,549 crore. This initiative aims to enhance the city's transportation infrastructure.
In a separate but related development, Karnataka's Infrastructure Development Minister M. B. Patil has written to Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, requesting the inclusion of the Bengaluru–Shivamogga air route in the next UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) bidding round. This plea is aimed at restoring suspended flight services on the route.
Patil highlighted the significance of the Bengaluru–Shivamogga air connectivity for the economic, agricultural, tourism, and industrial growth of the Malnad region and several central Karnataka districts, including Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Uttara Kannada, Davanagere, Chitradurga, and Haveri. The suspension of services has not only affected regional development but also inconvenienced passengers seeking onward domestic and international travel via Bengaluru.
Shivamogga Airport began operations in February 2023, with IndiGo initially operating flights between Shivamogga and Bengaluru. However, these services have been suspended for the past few months. Patil is seeking government support through the Viability Gap Funding (VGF) mechanism to improve the route's commercial viability and facilitate the resumption of flights. He also noted that progress on night-landing facilities at Shivamogga Airport is advancing rapidly.
