Europe experienced unprecedented heatwaves in June 2026, shattering temperature records across the continent and contributing to the hottest June globally. The extreme weather, described as "extraordinary" by the UN's weather agency, saw temperatures in western Europe rise 3°C above the 1991-2020 norm, surpassing the previous record set in 2025. In the UK, temperatures peaked at 37.7°C, breaking long-standing June records. Many European countries also set new monthly highs, with France and Spain recording their hottest June days on average.
