Johnson backs Texas House candidate Herrera despite 'detestable' language

House Speaker Mike Johnson has publicly backed Texas House candidate Brandon Herrera, despite past controversial statements and videos made by the nominee. Herrera, known online as the "AK Guy," boasts 4.2 million YouTube subscribers for his content focused on firearms. Johnson described Herrera's past language as "detestable" but argued that the candidate's online persona was part of his appeal and that Herrera is "far superior" to his Democratic opponent, Katy Padilla Stout.

Johnson stated that Herrera will join the "commonsense team of Republicans making life better for Americans." Herrera has also secured the endorsement of President Donald Trump, and Johnson attended a fundraising event for Herrera in July. Initially, Johnson had supported incumbent Rep. Tony Gonzales, but Gonzales resigned in March following sexual misconduct allegations. The Cook Political Report currently rates the district as "likely Republican."

Meanwhile, Speaker Johnson is navigating calls for Rep. Tony Gonzales to resign amid allegations of an affair with a staffer who died by suicide. Johnson has stated that while the accusations are "very serious," investigations must play out before any decision on resignation is made, urging Gonzales to address the matter with his constituents.
