Jay Clayton's nomination hearing to be the U.S. director of national intelligence is scheduled for July 15, the same day as the confirmation hearing for Erica Schwartz, President Donald Trump's nominee to lead the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Trump nominated Clayton, who would oversee the nation's 18 intelligence agencies, last month. Concerns had been raised about a prior temporary appointee, Bill Pulte, who lacked national security experience. Earlier in June, Trump had sought to link Clayton's hearing to the passage of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act. Schwartz, who previously served as deputy surgeon general during the COVID-19 pandemic, will appear before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions.
