An independent Irish lawmaker, Michael Healy-Rae, was assaulted while sitting in traffic in Dublin on Wednesday, an incident that Prime Minister Micheál Martin has labeled a "watershed moment" for political security in the country. A Dublin man was arrested on Thursday in connection with the attack, which left Healy-Rae with facial wounds that required stitches.
Healy-Rae, 59, was speaking on the phone to his son, Jackie Healy-Rae, a Kerry councilman, when a man approached his car and began punching him. Police recovered video footage of the assault. The attacker fled on foot, and Healy-Rae was taken to a hospital.
Prime Minister Martin, who himself faced an attempted assault at the National Ploughing Championships earlier in the week, highlighted Ireland's tradition of open political access. "We’ve never had this before in our society," Martin said, referring to the ability of leaders to "walk through our streets unhindered." He stressed the need to take the attack "very seriously."
Healy-Rae, who had previously served as a junior minister, stated he would not be deterred from his political career and called for a serious discussion about the increasing toxicity directed at public representatives. His son attributed the vitriol to months of social media attacks, particularly from anti-immigrant extremists, and expressed concern that an Irish politician could be seriously injured or killed.
Historically, Ireland has seen political violence, including during its war of independence and the Troubles in Northern Ireland. However, such threats largely ended with the peace accords in the mid-1990s. In recent years, the Irish government has grappled with rising street-level hostility toward politicians, with a 2023 report noting particular online hostility toward female lawmakers. The government has introduced reimbursements of up to €25,000 to help politicians enhance security at their homes and constituency offices.
