Iran-US peace talks postponed

Direct talks between the U.S. and Iran aimed at finalizing a tentative agreement to end military actions have been postponed, Switzerland's Foreign Ministry announced Friday. The postponement is attributed to logistical issues, with preparatory work on the agreement's details to continue.

U.S. President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed a provisional deal late Wednesday. The framework includes a gradual lifting of U.S. sanctions on Iran and commitments from Tehran to abandon efforts to develop a nuclear weapon. Both sides have been given 60 days to negotiate a final deal.

The agreement also calls for a halt to military operations in Lebanon. Israel, which was not a party to the agreement, continued strikes on Iran-backed Hezbollah targets.

Vice President JD Vance had indicated his intention to participate in the direct talks scheduled for the weekend in Switzerland, noting that Iran is a challenging country to negotiate with. However, Reuters reported the trip was called off due to logistical reasons.

The meeting in Switzerland was initially planned as a signing ceremony, but U.S. and Iranian officials signed the document separately on Wednesday night without meeting face-to-face. Trump described the deal as "very strong" at a press conference on the sidelines of the G7 summit.
