Iran mourns Khamenei amid deep societal divisions

Khamenei's rule, which began in 1989, was characterized by the development of Iran's nuclear program, missile arsenal, and regional alliances. He also consolidated hard-line clerical rule, largely neutralizing reform movements and empowering the Revolutionary Guard.

Significant protests and deadly crackdowns have underscored widespread opposition. An interim deal has been reached with the U.S. following Khamenei's death and an assault, potentially leading to sanctions relief in exchange for a nuclear agreement.

Hezbollah supporters in Beirut's southern suburbs held a memorial ceremony for Khamenei on Wednesday, with one mourner stating, “We are here to congratulate and bless, and at the same time to mourn the supreme leader, and to congratulate him on his martyrdom.”
