Hong Kong is seeking to revitalize its biomedical sector by integrating with the resources of the Greater Bay Area (GBA), aiming to overcome past challenges that have seen it lag behind Singapore. While Singapore methodically built a comprehensive biotech ecosystem, Hong Kong has struggled to translate its strong research base into commercial momentum due to high operating costs and a lagging regulatory environment.
The GBA, a region linking Hong Kong, Macau, and nine cities in Guangdong Province, offers Hong Kong a strategic advantage by combining its financial markets and universities with Shenzhen's manufacturing prowess, Guangzhou's clinical trial networks, and mainland China's vast market.
To address fragmented clinical trial management, Hong Kong announced the GBA International Clinical Trial Institute (CTI) in October 2023. This new platform aims to harmonize clinical research across Hong Kong's 42 hospitals and attract more trials, drawing inspiration from Denmark's 'Trial Nation' initiative.
