Hong Kong is hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Finance Ministers’ Meeting on October 20 and 21, 2026. This marks the first time the city has hosted such a gathering. China holds the APEC chair for 2026, and Beijing's decision to select Hong Kong as the venue is seen as a strategic signal of confidence in its role as the nation's premier international financial center, especially amid regional competition. The meeting, co-organized by the Ministry of Finance and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government, will cover topics such as macroeconomic and financial conditions, financial inclusion, digital infrastructure financing, and cross-border payments. Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu has outlined the agenda and promised a high-quality experience for delegates. Hong Kong has been a member of APEC since 1991, participating as "Hong Kong, China."
