Hong Kong is set to mandate at least 30 hours of digital education training for teachers every three years as part of a broader initiative to integrate artificial intelligence and technology into its school system. The blueprint, released by the Curriculum Development Council, also requires primary and secondary schools to embed digital elements into their annual development plans and introduces an innovation and technology curriculum for students.
According to Professor Isabella Poon Wai-yin, chairwoman of the council, the blueprint has been well-received by schools and approved by Secretary for Education Christine Choi Yuk-lin. The mandatory teacher training will encompass areas such as AI literacy, methods for integrating AI into subject teaching, and AI leadership. This training can be provided by various entities, including the Education Bureau, professional organizations, school sponsoring bodies, and universities.
