Honduras to buy Ukrainian drones to fight drug trafficking

Honduras has long served as a transit route for cocaine from South America and is increasingly concerned about local cultivation and processing operations, suggesting a shift from a transit corridor to a more active role in the narcotics production chain. The country contends with powerful criminal groups, including MS-13 and Barrio 18, which are associated with extortion, violence, and territorial control. Honduras experiences a high homicide rate, and recent incidents, including the killing of police officers near the Guatemalan border, underscore the severity of the drug trade's impact.

The proposed drone acquisition is part of a broader security cooperation strategy for Honduras. The nation's armed forces are also in discussions with the United States regarding anti-crime operations, and President Asfura noted that the Ukrainian drones could also have civilian applications, such as in agriculture.
