Hundreds of women are reporting that fitness trackers, particularly Oura rings, are flagging early signs of pregnancy and miscarriage through biometric data, sometimes before users are aware.
Fitness trackers are increasingly being used to monitor health metrics, and their ability to potentially detect early signs of pregnancy and miscarriage highlights their growing role in personal health management, while also raising questions about data reliability and user anxiety.
Hundreds of women are reporting that their fitness trackers are providing early indications of pregnancy and miscarriage, sometimes before they are aware. Ravika, a 34-year-old solicitor, received unusual alerts from her Oura ring on her birthday holiday, indicating a poor health score with elevated heart rate, increased body temperature, and dropped heart rate variability, despite feeling fine. After a week of unchanged stats, she researched online and found a community of women whose fitness trackers had signaled pregnancy through similar data.
Ravika's experience was confirmed by a positive pregnancy test a week later. Following cramping and a notification about her body being under significant strain, she consulted a doctor. The subsequent wait for testing to confirm the pregnancy's health led to an obsessive checking of her tracker stats, which she described as a "life or death situation."
Sofia, 32, shared similar experiences, using her Oura ring data to detect two miscarriages before a third, healthy pregnancy. She noted that seeing her temperature drop in the app was how she knew something was wrong. During her healthy pregnancy, she experienced anxiety and frequently checked her data, eventually removing the ring for the first trimester.
Experts like Dr. Stuart Lavery, a consultant of reproductive medicine, acknowledge the use of such technology for early detection but caution about potential increases in anxiety due to the need for more research on reliability. Dr. Chris Curry, Oura's clinical director of women's health, stated that pregnancy can be an uncertain time and encouraged users to take breaks from the app experience if they feel overwhelmed, emphasizing that the ring is a support tool, not a replacement for medical care.
Ravika, who sadly miscarried, plans to reconsider wearing her tracker when trying to conceive again, suggesting she might remove it after a positive pregnancy test to manage anxiety.
