Finance of America is highlighting the evolving financial needs of homeowners, particularly those in retirement, and positioning its reverse mortgage products as a crucial solution beyond traditional lending. The company argues that for decades, the mortgage industry has primarily focused on home purchases and refinances, overlooking the financial requirements that arise during later stages of homeownership.
Many older homeowners possess substantial home equity but struggle to qualify for conventional loans like home equity loans or HELOCs due to income requirements or the burden of an additional monthly mortgage payment. Finance of America suggests that reverse mortgages can provide access to cash for home improvements, healthcare, debt consolidation, or family support without these traditional barriers.
Jonathan Scarpati, Chief Production Officer at Finance of America, stated that the company's focus is on helping borrowers "through the second half of homeownership." He noted that as interest rates have risen, conversations about reverse mortgages have increasingly begun as alternatives to HELOCs for borrowers who either don't qualify or prefer not to take on another monthly payment.
Finance of America's proprietary HomeSafe product suite is designed to address these scenarios. Options include HomeSafe Standard, which offers up to $4 million in financing for higher-value properties, and HomeSafe Second, allowing access to up to $1 million in equity while preserving existing low-rate first mortgages. Jessica Rankins, VP of Operations Enablement, emphasized that these solutions are designed for real borrower situations.
The company also aims to simplify the adoption of reverse lending for originators. Through its Partner Portal, educational resources, and AI-powered assistant named Joy, Finance of America seeks to integrate reverse mortgages into existing lender databases and borrower relationships. The ReverseMatch eligibility engine is designed to help lenders identify potential reverse mortgage candidates within their current customer portfolios, turning existing relationships into future growth opportunities.
