Colonel Vadym Sukharevskyi, formerly the commander of Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces, has been chosen as the new head of the country's Marines, according to multiple Ukrainian media outlets citing sources familiar with the matter. He will succeed Major General Dmytro Deliatytskyi in the role. Sukharevskyi, a popular commander, was previously assigned to lead the drone branch in 2024 but was dismissed after less than a year amid reported disagreements with then-Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi. His return is part of a larger reshuffle initiated by Syrskyi's replacement, Mykhailo Drapatyi, aimed at moving away from Soviet-style leadership. Sukharevskyi has a history of combat, including ordering the first shots fired against Russian proxy forces in Sloviansk in April 2014 and commanding the 59th Motorized Brigade during the liberation of Kherson.
