Record dry conditions in England and Wales, including the driest July in 190 years, have led to significantly low water levels across the country. This is having a detrimental impact on houseboat owners and river navigation.
The Environment Agency has reported that low water levels are affecting houseboat communities on the lower Thames, stopping navigation on rivers like the Stour, and closing fish and canoe passes on the River Medway. Vandalism at locks has also been reported, exacerbating management issues.
Specifically, the River Nene in Cambridgeshire has seen navigational closures between Dog in a Doublet Lock and Orton Lock due to extremely low water levels. This situation is compounded by the river's water being used by firefighters to combat a wildfire at Holme Fen nature reserve.
Officials from the National Drought Group stated that 27 million people are currently under water-use restrictions, with 45 million living in drought conditions. The Met Office described the recent weather as "truly remarkable".
