Elon Musk has achieved the historic milestone of becoming the world's first trillionaire, a feat accomplished immediately following the public debut of his space exploration company, SpaceX, in June 2026. The company's initial public offering valued it at over $2 trillion, propelling Musk's personal net worth beyond the $1 trillion mark.
Musk's wealth is now predominantly derived from SpaceX, which accounts for more than 70% of his total net worth. Tesla, the electric vehicle manufacturer he chairs and formerly led as CEO, represents a 13% stake, with his other ventures, Neuralink and The Boring Company, comprising the remainder.
Musk's journey to trillionaire status began with early entrepreneurial successes. He became a millionaire before age 30 through Zip2, a web-based city guide company he co-founded with his brother Kimbal Musk, which was sold to Compaq for over $300 million in 1999. Subsequently, he co-founded X.com, an online bank that merged with Peter Thiel's Confinity to form PayPal. eBay acquired PayPal for $1.5 billion in 2002.
That same year, Musk co-founded SpaceX. In 2004, he invested in and became chairman of Tesla, eventually taking on the CEO role in 2008. He steered Tesla through financial difficulties during the 2008 crisis, investing $40 million and securing a loan to prevent bankruptcy. Tesla's public offering in 2010 marked a significant turning point, accelerating Musk's wealth accumulation. By 2012, he was listed on Forbes' Billionaires List with an estimated $2 billion.
Further ventures included the tunnel-digging company The Boring Company, founded in 2016, and the neurotechnology startup Neuralink in 2017. Musk's net worth experienced exponential growth starting in 2020, largely driven by Tesla's soaring stock price. His fortune grew from under $30 billion at the start of 2020 to approximately $170 billion a year later, reaching an estimated $340 billion by November 2021.
While Tesla's stock is known for its volatility, SpaceX has demonstrated more stable growth. An insider share sale in December 2024 valued SpaceX at $350 billion, adding about $50 billion to Musk's net worth in a single day and making him the first person to reach the $400 billion mark. The company's planned IPO was confirmed a year later, with an insider sale valuing the private entity at $800 billion, further boosting Musk's fortune past $600 billion before the public offering.
