El Salvador's ruling party, Nuevas Ideas, has officially nominated President Nayib Bukele to seek a third consecutive term in the February 2027 presidential elections. The nomination, announced Monday, follows constitutional reforms approved in July 2025 by the supermajority-controlled Legislative Assembly. These reforms abolished presidential term limits and extended the presidential term from five to six years, allowing for indefinite reelection. Bukele, 44, who enjoyed high approval ratings and won nearly 85% of the vote in his February 2024 reelection, will again run with Vice President Félix Ulloa. The constitutional changes have drawn criticism from lawyers and human rights advocates who accuse Bukele of concentrating power and violating the constitution. Bukele has defended the reforms, stating that many developed countries allow indefinite reelection and that El Salvador's security policies have drastically reduced homicide rates, making citizens feel safer.
