Russia launched a significant ballistic missile and drone attack on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, and the surrounding region on August 5, killing at least 17 people and injuring dozens more. Fires engulfed parts of Kyiv and its suburbs following the assault. In Kyiv Oblast, 16 people were killed and 29 injured, with rescue operations ongoing. The town of Brovary was severely impacted, with eight fatalities reported at a train station. In Kyiv city, one woman was killed and at least 16 others injured.
Ukraine's Air Force stated that Russia deployed 24 ballistic missiles, four hypersonic missiles, and 115 Shahed-type drones, none of which were intercepted. President Volodymyr Zelensky noted that the primary targets included civilian enterprise warehouses and infrastructure, such as a railway station. He emphasized the critical need for anti-ballistic missile supplies from partners to prevent further casualties and destruction, highlighting that delays in delivery have led to tragic outcomes.
President Zelensky also revealed that allied supplies of air defense missiles have dropped by two-thirds in the first half of the year compared to the same period in 2025. This shortage was compounded by Russia's tactics, which included effective drone reconnaissance and simultaneous, multi-directional missile launches, making interception extremely difficult even with more interceptors. Earlier, on August 1, Ukraine managed to shoot down only one out of 27 ballistic missiles due to similar shortages.
In parallel, Ukrainian drones reportedly targeted industrial sites within Russia. A Wildberries warehouse in Aleksin, Tula Oblast, was struck, resulting in a fire. Tula Oblast Governor Dmitry Milyaev confirmed drone strikes on residential buildings and industrial facilities in addition to the Wildberries site. Ukrainian strikes were also reported in Kazan, Tatarstan Republic.
Further escalating regional tensions, intelligence suggests North Korea is deploying a ballistic missile unit to Russia's Voronezh Oblast. This move deepens military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang, with Russia having already used North Korean ballistic missiles in attacks on Ukraine. The deployed unit is believed to possess multiple launchers and a significant number of missiles, with Russia having already received a substantial shipment.
In a separate development, Oleksii Yukov, the head of the Ukrainian body recovery group Platsdarm, was killed on the front line while conducting repatriation missions.
