Disney Plans Major Expansion for Shanghai Park

The Walt Disney Company has confirmed plans for a significant expansion of its Shanghai Disneyland resort. The development includes the addition of a fourth themed hotel and a larger shopping, dining, and entertainment district. This expansion is strategically positioned to bridge the existing resort to a parcel of land that has long been rumored to be designated for a second theme park.

This move follows years of speculation and previous concepts for a second gate in Shanghai. Former Walt Disney Imagineering President Bob Weis had previously described a highly creative new park concept that received a standing ovation, drawing parallels to a next-generation EPCOT or the canceled WestCOT project. The Shanghai municipal government's approval of a planning adjustment in January 2025 for the area surrounding the resort, reclassifying land for commercial services, parking, and transportation hubs, further supports the progression of these expansion plans.

Disney currently operates six resort destinations globally, with each property continuously evolving through expansions and new lands. While a new park in Abu Dhabi is also in development, recent indications suggest Shanghai will be the site of Disney's next major park project. The Shanghai park first opened on June 16, 2016, with then-chairman Bob Iger stating that China represented "incredible potential" for the company.
