The Chinese consulate in Melbourne urged local authorities to "severely punish" the person responsible for killing a Chinese delivery rider in the city center on Friday evening, November 6, 2026. The killing drew online outrage over delivery platform safety standards.
Victoria Police said emergency services were called to Frederick Way, near Queen Victoria Market, just after 8pm on Friday. Officers found a man with stab wounds; paramedics treated him but he died at the scene. Family confirmed the dead man was Jianming Feng, 47, a food delivery driver from Xi'an in China's Shaanxi province, ABC News reported.
Detectives believe Feng was one of two delivery riders who saw someone tampering with their bicycles and confronted him, and that an altercation followed. The second rider, a 34-year-old man, suffered non-life threatening injuries and was discharged from the Royal Melbourne Hospital on Saturday, ABC News reported.
Victoria Police said a 51-year-old Footscray man was arrested in Footscray on Saturday morning and will be interviewed, and that they were not looking for anyone else. A crime scene cordon was set up between Queen Street and A'Beckett Street.
HungryPanda confirmed Feng was one of its riders and said it was "deeply saddened" by the incident. A spokesperson said the company had established a dedicated response team to assist his family and was cooperating with Victoria Police.
A vigil was scheduled for Saturday evening in front of Melbourne's State Library, ABC News reported, and floral tributes were placed at the scene.
