Construction has commenced on a large commercial complex in Dalian, China, designed to cater to a wide range of consumer needs. This development coincides with significant activity in the semiconductor and shipbuilding sectors within the city.
Solidigm, a U.S. subsidiary of SK hynix, is reportedly in discussions with the U.S. government concerning a potential $45 billion investment to establish a NAND flash semiconductor plant in the United States. This investment is contingent on U.S. approval to import manufacturing equipment for its existing plant in Dalian, China, which Solidigm aims to upgrade to improve production efficiency and secure funding for the U.S. facility. The U.S. government had previously revoked the Verified End User (VEU) status for Chinese plants of Samsung Electronics and SK hynix in August 2026, requiring export licenses for U.S.-made semiconductor equipment.
Meanwhile, Dalian's shipbuilding sector is experiencing substantial growth. Ship exports from the city reached 49.38 billion yuan ($7.4 billion) in the first three quarters of 2026, marking a 177% increase year-on-year. Leading companies like Hengli Heavy Industry have order books extending through 2030, and the city's overall shipbuilding and marine engineering equipment industry output is projected to exceed 100 billion yuan this year.
