The official inquiry into that incident identified a lightning strike that caused a trackside circuit failure, making one train undetectable to the control center and leading to a collision.
The proposed space-based system aims to create a more resilient "nervous system" for the railways, moving control functions off the ground and away from vulnerabilities to natural events such as lightning, floods, and earthquakes. Current systems rely on extensive trackside infrastructure, which is costly to maintain and susceptible to environmental damage.
However, the researchers acknowledge that this advanced technological solution also presents new challenges. The very sophistication that promises to eliminate physical vulnerabilities could potentially open the door to digital threats, raising concerns about the system's susceptibility to hacking.
