Chicago authorities are seeking a suspect after a cross was found burned in Grant Park earlier this week. The Chicago Fire Department responded to the incident on Tuesday afternoon, quickly extinguishing the flames without any reported injuries. The FBI has joined the investigation, with a spokesperson stating that all potential bias-motivated incidents are taken seriously.
Police have released images of a person of interest, described as a young man in his 20s, who was allegedly seen fleeing the scene. Cross burnings are historically associated with white supremacy and racism, particularly by groups like the Ku Klux Klan.
Rev Michael L Pfleger, pastor of Chicago’s Faith Community of Saint Sabina, condemned the act as premeditated and a symbol of hate. He has offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the perpetrator's identification.
Mayor Brandon Johnson also denounced the incident, stating that hate has no place in Chicago and that all residents deserve to feel safe and respected in public spaces. He affirmed the city's commitment to remaining a welcoming and inclusive place for everyone.
