Key facts
- BYD and Gentari will deploy BYD's Flash Charging technology in Malaysia.
- The technology can deliver up to 1.5MW, charging compatible EVs up to 400km in five minutes.
- The partnership aims to expand charging infrastructure beyond showrooms to major intercity routes.
- Gentari operates over 600 EV charging points in Malaysia and provides access to 18,000 more through its Go Roaming Hub.
Chinese auto giant BYD is partnering with Gentari, the clean energy arm of Malaysia's national oil company Petronas, to develop fast-charging infrastructure as the Southeast Asian country races to expand its EV charging network. Malaysia had 6,416 public chargers as of the end of May, well short of its target of 30,000 by 2030.
Gentari and BYD Malaysia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore the deployment of BYD’s Flash Charging technology in Malaysia. The collaboration aims to expand ultra-fast EV charging infrastructure beyond showrooms, including along major intercity routes connecting key population centres.
BYD’s Flash Charging technology is capable of delivering up to 1.5MW, providing approximately 400km of driving range in just five minutes for compatible EVs under optimal conditions. The MoU was signed in Shenzhen, China, on October 21, 2026. Gentari and BYD Malaysia will jointly identify suitable locations for BYD Flash Charging stations, especially along key intercity corridors, and assess power infrastructure requirements, battery energy storage systems (BESS), technical and commercial feasibility and potential operating models.
The collaboration combines Gentari’s experience in developing and operating EV charging networks with BYD’s battery and high-power charging technology. Gentari currently operates more than 600 EV charging points in Malaysia and provides access to approximately 18,000 charging points across Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and India through its Gentari Go Roaming Hub. BYD Vice President Liu Xueliang stated that Malaysia is an important market for BYD and they are pleased to bring BYD Flash Charging there. BYD Malaysia Managing Director Jacob Ma expressed excitement about the collaboration and its role in building a stronger EV ecosystem for Malaysians. Besides EV charging infrastructure, Gentari and BYD will also explore collaboration in renewable energy generation and energy storage.
