The reappearance of giant bluefin tunas off the Yorkshire coast, for the first time in over six decades, has been celebrated by researchers as a significant success for marine conservation and fisheries management. Two of the large fish were caught a day apart near Whitby earlier this week, marking a return for a species that had largely vanished from the north-east coast of Britain since the 1960s.
Professor Rodney Forster from the University of Hull described the tuna's return as a "success story about the management of fisheries." He noted that bluefin tuna populations, which were nearly depleted in their Mediterranean spawning grounds in the 1970s and 80s, have increased due to careful protection. This recovery has led to the species spreading back to historical grounds around the UK and even into the Baltic Sea.
Forster also pointed out that the bluefin tuna are not the only marine life returning to the Yorkshire coast, with minke whales and bottlenose dolphins showing a noticeable increase in the North Sea over the past decade. Bryce Stewart, a senior research fellow at the Marine Biological Association, echoed this sentiment, calling the return "fantastic" and praising the work of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (Iccat) in re-establishing these populations.
However, concerns have been raised that the increased presence of bluefin tuna further north may also be linked to climate change. Both Forster and Stewart mentioned rising temperatures in the North Sea as a contributing factor, though they emphasized that fisheries management played a more significant role. Warmer waters can benefit the small fish, such as herring and sprat, that tuna feed on, creating a "knock-on effect."
Conservationists like Calum Duncan from the Marine Conservation Society lauded the regeneration of tuna populations but cautioned that their continued survival depends on consistent care and British fishing policies prioritizing marine ecology. Duncan stated that while there is a long way to go, the return of the bluefin tuna sends a positive signal that human intervention can reverse environmental decline through good decision-making and implementation.
