Balaji Srinivasan's Network School has acquired Farcaster, rebranding it as the Network State Protocol. The platform has begun enforcing new rules by banning users for past posts, aiming to create a 'Singapore of social media' for techno-optimists. This move has drawn criticism from some users who see it as contrary to decentralized ethos.
The acquisition and subsequent moderation of Farcaster by Balaji Srinivasan's Network School signal a push towards stricter content control on a decentralized platform, potentially impacting the ethos of user freedom and open participation in Web3 social networks.
Balaji Srinivasan's Network School has acquired the decentralized social platform Farcaster, rebranding it as the Network State Protocol. The platform has initiated a wave of user bans for past posts, a move that has drawn criticism from some within the decentralized social network community. Srinivasan stated the bans are part of his vision to transform Farcaster into the 'Singapore of social media,' fostering a community of techno-optimists operating under a strict code of conduct.
According to Srinivasan, the moderation efforts, which involved both AI and human review of millions of posts, are aimed at establishing 'law and order' and restoring offline norms online. He compared the approach to El Salvador's crime reduction strategy, focusing on moderating repeat offenders who have been muted or blocked by many accounts. Users who decline to opt into the 'social smart contract' that governs the app's rules will have read-only access to the main app but will retain their keys, funds, followers, and post history, allowing them to migrate to alternative clients.
