Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has ceremonially flagged off an international consignment of Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged Tezpur litchis to Singapore from Guwahati. This initiative aims to expand the reach of Assam's horticultural produce in global markets.
The consignment, comprising 500 kilograms of the renowned "Piyaji" variety of litchi, marks a significant step for the state's farming community, building on the recent successful export of these litchis to Dubai. The export to Singapore reflects a growing international demand for Assam's premium agricultural products, attributed to the state government's efforts in strengthening market linkages and export infrastructure.
Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Sarma noted the increasing international demand for Tezpur litchis. He mentioned that a prior shipment of 2,000 kilograms was sent to Dubai via APEDA. The current 500-kilogram consignment to Singapore will be transported by a Druk Air flight. The Singapore High Commissioner has already indicated interest in procuring an additional 500 kilograms.
Sarma expressed optimism about exporting other distinctive Assam products like kaji nemu and bhut jolokia, provided strict adherence to quality standards is maintained. He also highlighted Assam's potential in ginger cultivation and export, with plans for government efforts to boost agricultural exports.
He pointed out that current production of Tezpur litchis is limited to about 3,000 trees, which constrained larger export volumes despite high demand both within Assam and nationally. He shared that the quality of Tezpur litchis was highly appreciated by the Prime Minister and several Union Ministers.
The Chief Minister believes this export initiative will motivate farmers to increase litchi cultivation and reaffirmed the government's commitment to creating global opportunities, enhancing farmer incomes, and showcasing Assam's agricultural products worldwide.
