Apple has significantly upgraded Siri with AI capabilities, transforming it into a more conversational chatbot. While still in beta and imperfect, the new Siri can access the web, understand personal context from messages and emails, read on-screen content, and assist with camera-based tasks. Users can also leverage its writing tools to draft messages and emails.
This AI-driven overhaul of Siri represents Apple's significant push into generative AI, aiming to make its devices more intuitive and capable by integrating advanced language models and contextual understanding directly into its core assistant. The success of these features could influence user engagement with Apple's ecosystem and set new standards for voice assistants.
Apple has launched a significantly upgraded version of its virtual assistant, Siri, powered by new AI capabilities, now available in public beta for iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. This overhaul transforms Siri from a basic command-taker into a more conversational chatbot, capable of understanding context and performing more complex tasks.
The new Siri can now access the web to provide direct answers rather than simply opening a browser. It also possesses personal context awareness, allowing it to search through a user's messages, emails, and photos to find specific information, such as confirmation numbers or restaurant recommendations. This feature is intended to save users time scrolling through past communications.
Furthermore, Siri has gained on-screen awareness, enabling it to answer questions about content displayed on the device without requiring the user to manually provide context. On iPhones, a dedicated Siri mode within the Camera app allows it to interpret visual information, assisting with tasks like splitting bills or identifying meal ingredients.
Apple's new Writing Tools are integrated across various typing interfaces, aiming to draft messages and emails in a style that mimics the user's own writing patterns, even adapting to the recipient. The standalone Siri app provides a persistent workspace where past prompts and answers are retained, facilitating multi-step tasks and easy referencing of previous interactions.
Other new features include a photo reframing tool that uses AI to naturally extend image canvases and re-center shots, and the ability to extract event details from images like concert posters to automatically create calendar entries. While the new Siri is described as imperfect, these enhancements are presented as making the upgrade worthwhile for users seeking a more capable and integrated assistant.
