Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ro Khanna vie to succeed Bernie Sanders

The race to succeed Senator Bernie Sanders as the leading figure of the progressive movement is intensifying, particularly as Democrats approach a crucial Senate primary in Michigan. Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Ro Khanna of California are emerging as the key contenders, each employing distinct strategies to build their political brands and influence.

Within Sanders' close circle, there is a prevailing sentiment that Ocasio-Cortez is the natural successor, with one individual close to the senator stating, "It’s always been clear that AOC is the heir. Always." This view is reinforced by their shared policy interests, including a joint push for AI regulation, and a coordinated circle of advisers.

However, the broader progressive coalition sees significant behind-the-scenes maneuvering and disagreement. Allies of Khanna argue that Ocasio-Cortez's more selective approach to endorsements, particularly in the midterms, is too cautious for a movement standard-bearer. Conversely, Ocasio-Cortez's camp views her strategic involvement in key races as a strength, leveraging her ability to mobilize specific voting blocs late in campaigns.

Both representatives have backed Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive former public health official, in the contentious Michigan Senate primary. Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders appeared together at a rally for El-Sayed, a collaboration highlighted in his campaign advertising. Khanna, while also supporting El-Sayed through digital fundraising and separate campaigning, has emphasized building a broader, majoritarian progressivism rather than focusing on a single successor.

Sanders himself has urged a focus on current issues, stating, "The presidential election is in 2 years and 3 months. Let’s focus now on how we resolve the urgent issues facing our country." Khanna indicated he would decide on his own presidential ambitions around Thanksgiving, asserting that his decision would not be altered by an Ocasio-Cortez candidacy.
