Le Commandant Charcot, the world's first luxury ice-breaking cruise ship, offers passengers unique culinary experiences, including caviar, prepared by a team trained by renowned chef Alain Ducasse. Commissioned by French cruise company Ponant and unveiled in 2020, the ship can sail 270 passengers to remote destinations such as Greenland or the North Pole, and can even undertake a semi-circumnavigation of Antarctica in 30 days.
Captain Stanislas Devorsine described the challenges of navigating the 150-meter-long vessel through dense ice and harsh weather conditions, noting that the ship's 45,500 horsepower requires extreme precision. The hotel manager, Jean-Lou Rodot-Dufayet, ensures the 123 cabins and suites are unaffected by bad weather. The ship's technical crew maintains machinery in freezing conditions, and the crew has developed innovations like polar suits, with some being considered for adoption by Arctic Nations' Search and Rescue teams.
