Developer Brandon Thomas has released free, open-source applications WordCraft, GridCraft, and DeckCraft, which mimic the functionality of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. These clones were built using the Rust programming language and Anthropic's Claude AI model. Thomas previously gained attention for creating similar AI-powered clones of Adobe's Creative Cloud applications.
The new suite is designed to run offline and across multiple operating systems, including Windows, macOS, Linux, and BSD, as well as in a web browser. WordCraft reportedly covers 88% of Word's ribbon features and can read and write .docx files, while GridCraft handles 513 of Excel's worksheet functions and DeckCraft covers 79% of PowerPoint's features. The developer estimates WordCraft is about 60% ready for professional use and GridCraft about 50% ready, with compatibility for real-world .xlsx files being a next step.
Each application is designed to allow AI agents to trigger commands through Anthropic's Model Context Protocol. This release offers a free alternative to Microsoft's paid Microsoft 365 subscription, which costs $99.99 per year for a single user.
