WASHINGTON, Oct 28 (Reuters) - The United States on Wednesday imposed sanctions on Rwanda's ministry of defense in fresh Democratic Republic of Congo-related sanctions, according to the Treasury Department website.
AFC/M23 rebels control large parts of North and South Kivu provinces in Congo following their early 2025 advance, during which they captured eastern Congo's two largest cities. The UN and Western governments say the group is backed by Rwanda, which Kigali denies.
The sanctions come as fighting continues despite ongoing mediation efforts, including those led by the United States. So far those efforts have brought little change on the ground.
Spokespeople for the Rwandan and Congolese governments did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
