Poland Scrambles Jets Amid Russian Missile Airspace Violation

Poland scrambled fighter jets in response to a Russian missile that significantly violated its airspace, an incident that also involved NATO jets and highlighted regional security concerns. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has warned of a possible new massive Russian attack, potentially occurring on Tuesday evening. He urged citizens to heed air raid alerts, stating that current air defense supplies are insufficient to intercept a significant portion of Russian missiles. In the Baltic region, French warplanes intercepted Russian military aircraft 11 times in one week as part of NATO's Baltic Air Policing Mission. French officials characterized these intercepts, which involved armed fighter jets, intelligence, and transport planes flying without flight plans or radio contact, as 'provocations'.

Further escalating tensions, Russia deployed cluster munitions in Dnipro, one of Ukraine's largest cities, resulting in multiple fatalities in a densely populated area. A Ukrainian F-16 fighter jet was reportedly filmed successfully intercepting and destroying a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile at low altitude, possibly using an AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missile. Social media reports also indicated jet activity in western Tehran, though the nature and reason for this activity remain unconfirmed amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The Armed Forces of Ukraine have released indicative estimates of Russia's combat losses as of June 8.

Separately, the pilot of a US F-15E Strike Eagle, which was shot down over Iran on April 3, had been involved in a friendly-fire incident less than five weeks prior. This earlier incident involved a Kuwaiti F/A-18 mistakenly downing three F-15Es.
