Woman in critical condition after shark attack at Coogee Beach

Members of the public pulled the woman from the water and began first aid before paramedics arrived. She sustained significant flesh wounds to her leg and arms, requiring extensive surgery. The victim was transported by helicopter to a hospital.

Coogee Beach and several other beaches along Sydney's eastern coast were closed as a precautionary measure. Authorities deployed a shark-spotting helicopter and jetskis to patrol the waters.

This incident marks the latest in an unusual series of shark attacks off Australia's coast this year. Prior to this event, four fatalities had been recorded, including spearfishing diver Daniel Turpin, who was killed on May 24, and Steve Mattabonni, who died on May 16. A 12-year-old boy also died in January following a bull shark attack in Sydney Harbor.

Australia has averaged between two and three fatal shark attacks annually since 2000. Scientists suggest that factors such as increased water usage and rising ocean temperatures may be contributing to sharks altering their migratory patterns, leading to more human encounters.
