Ukraine's General Staff announced on July 21 that its forces had successfully struck a Russian MiG-29 fighter jet and a Pantsir-S1 air defense system at the Khalino airfield in Russia's Kursk Oblast. The operation was attributed to Ukraine's 15th Artillery Reconnaissance Brigade "Black Forest."
The General Staff stated that these strikes are intended to diminish Russia's ability to defend its military sites and to undermine its capacity to sustain the ongoing war.
The Pantsir-S1 is described as a key modern Russian air defense system, utilized for protecting military installations and intercepting Ukrainian long-range drones. Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) estimates its cost at between $15 million and $20 million. The MiG-29 is a fighter jet employed for air defense and other combat roles.
In addition to the Kursk Oblast strikes, Ukrainian forces also targeted several other Russian military assets overnight. These included a Bussol-S radar station near Khorly in occupied Kherson Oblast, which is used for detecting sea targets. Ukrainian forces also hit a logistics warehouse near Davydovske in Donetsk Oblast, an ammunition depot in Luhansk Oblast, and another logistics site in Kursk Oblast. Drone command posts were also struck near Komar in Donetsk Oblast, Kamianske in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, and Zaporizhzhia village in Donetsk Oblast.
"Ukraine's Defense Forces will continue to systematically carry out measures aimed at ending Russia's armed aggression," the General Staff concluded.
