British forces intercepted a Russian shadow fleet oil tanker, the MV Smyrtos, in the English Channel. The operation, which involved Royal Marine Commandos fast-roping from a helicopter and support from the Royal Air Force, marks the first time a vessel from Russia's estimated 700-strong shadow fleet has been interdicted in UK waters. The captain of the tanker, 38-year-old Indian national Ajay Pant, has been charged with contravening sanctions and is due to appear in court. Twenty-four crew members remain on the vessel, which is being held off the coast of Weymouth. The UK government stated the action sends a clear signal to Russia that it can and will act against its war machine, aiming to disrupt oil revenues funding the conflict in Ukraine.
