Poland has officially welcomed its first three F-35 'Husarz' fighter jets into service, marking a significant advancement in its military capabilities. The fifth-generation aircraft performed a ceremonial flypast over major Polish cities, including Gdańsk, Warsaw, Kraków, and Łódź, before their formal induction at the 32nd Tactical Air Base in Łask.
Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz hailed the day as long-awaited, emphasizing Poland's entry into an elite group of nations operating such advanced aircraft. The F-35s, produced by Lockheed Martin, feature stealth technology and sophisticated sensor suites, enabling them to gather and relay critical battlefield information. Military experts view their introduction as a qualitative leap for the Polish armed forces and a reinforcement of NATO's eastern flank.
Poland has contracted for a total of 32 F-35 fighters, with deliveries expected to be completed by 2029. The initial three jets arrived in late May, and further deliveries are planned in the coming years. The aircraft will be based at the Łask and Świdwin tactical air bases, which are undergoing infrastructure upgrades, including the construction of technical facilities and modern simulators. Full operational capability is anticipated around 2030.
The F-35s were symbolically named 'Husarz,' a name chosen through an open vote, referencing Poland's historical elite cavalry. This naming tradition connects modern military hardware with significant elements of Polish history, following precedents like the F-16 'Jastrząb.' The deal, signed in early 2020, is worth $4.6 billion and includes a training package and additional engines.
