Mexican authorities have arrested Ramon Angel, identified as "El R1," the alleged leader of a criminal cell linked to the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel. Security Minister Omar Garcia announced on X that Angel is accused of ordering the assassination of Mayor Carlos Manzo of Uruapan, Michoacan, which occurred in November 2025.
The killing of Manzo, who had publicly criticized the government's anti-crime efforts, shocked the country and led to protests. The "Los Rs" group, led by Angel, is allegedly involved in extortion, homicide, and drug trafficking.
In connection with the case, at least 31 individuals have been arrested, including a 17-year-old believed to have fired the shots. Manzo was succeeded by his wife, Grecia Quiroz.
