Islamist militants kill 10 police officers in northwest Pakistan

Provincial police chief Zulfikar Hameed stated that the militants used improvised explosive devices attached to quadcopters before ambushing the police check post. The area has historically been a stronghold for militant groups. Militancy in Pakistan's border regions has escalated in recent months, primarily targeting security forces.

This latest incident occurred days after a suicide bombing in the nearby Tank district killed 15 people, including 12 Pakistani soldiers. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for that attack. The TTP has been engaged in an insurgency against the Pakistani state since 2007, seeking to establish its own strict Islamic governance.

Pakistan alleges that militants utilize safe havens in Afghanistan to plan and execute attacks within its borders. However, the Afghan Taliban government denies these accusations, asserting that militancy is an internal Pakistani issue. The surge in militant attacks along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border carries the potential to reignite tensions between the two neighboring countries, which engaged in their most severe conflict in years in February.
